FAQs

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a combination of Psychotherapy (talk therapy) and Hypnosis (trance). The talk therapy in itself is extremely beneficial and its effects are enhanced by the application of Hypnosis, which enables the subconscious mind to make beneficial changes to help you move forward., make permanent changes and helping you to move towards your goals.

What to expect

Many people believe that Hypnotherapy is something that is “done” to them, that they explain their issue to the therapist who then simply hypnotises their problem away.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is joint process with both you and the Clinical Hypnotherapist guiding you towards your solutions. It is important to understand that change happens because you want it to and because you are prepared to take the necessary steps to allow it to happen.

The initial consultation is free of charge and is designed to assess:

  • What you want to achieve
  • How hypnotherapy can help you
  • How many sessions you are likely to need

Subsequent therapy sessions involve much more than Hypnosis. During the first part of each session we’ll talk about the progress you have made and I’ll be encouraging you to express yourself positively, focusing on solutions rather than dwelling on problems.
I’ll help you to imagine your preferred future, a future where you have a more useful perspective on the quality of your life. I’ll then guide you into a relaxed state of Hypnosis so that we can reinforce in your subconscious what we have discussed in the session.

What is Psychotherapy?

There are many different kinds of Psychotherapy which aim to help people overcome stress or emotional problems. Psychotherapy involves talking together with your therapist with the aim of helping you to overcome your difficulties or obstacles in your life. Psychotherapy is often referred to as a ‘talking treatment’.

What to expect

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a modern talking therapy utilising the most up to date neuroscience. It uses practical, modern and well researched strategies to help people make significant, positive changes in their lives in a relatively short period of time, it is designed to reduce anxiety and all the symptoms that are associated with it by calming the mind. As the name suggests it focuses on solutions for the future, rather than analysing problems of the past.
Provided you are willing to make changes to the way you think, the therapy can be highly effective in relieving the symptoms of anxiety and stress such as depression, OCD, PTSD, insomnia, exam stress, confidence and self esteem issues, panic attacks and so much more. Minor phobias such as spiders, water, flying, public-speaking etc., can be treated quickly.

As the name suggests focusing on solutions means we do not dwell on problems so everything we do is in a positive mindset Instead we:

  • Acknowledge where you are currently
  • Identify where you want to be
  • Help you to make the necessary changes.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy avoids problem talk: The type of psychotherapy I practise does not involve analysing painful memories from the past, therefore never having to traumatise a client. If you have experienced unpleasant events in your past, we acknowledge they happened and help you get from where you are to where you want to be in your life.

What is Hypnosis like?

Actually, we all experience the Hypnotic state in our everyday lives, it's a perfectly normal event.
Have you ever driven home and not remembered anything about the journey similar to being in autopilot mode, or been engrossed in a good book or TV program and not been conscious of time passing or other small distractions around you? If so, you’ve been in a state of focused attention, not unlike the feeling of being Hypnotised. During Hypnosis (trance) you will be guided into a similar state so that positive suggestion can be directed towards your subconscious mind, it's a completely relaxing and pleasant experience for the client.

What Hypnosis is

Hypnosis is simply a state of focused attention. In this relaxed state, your mind is more responsive to positive suggestion. In a therapeutic setting, the suggestions are designed to be beneficial to help you change your unhelpful thought patterns.
Clients often comment about how “ordinary” Hypnosis feels – it’s not unlike daydreaming – you can often hear everything that is being said whilst in a deeply relaxed state. In fact, you could think of it as guided daydreaming.

What Hypnosis isn’t

There are many misconceptions to what hypnosis is the usual image that is portrayed in films, books and the media, is that the hypnotherapist can take control of your mind, this type of hypnotism is best left to the stage or TV for entertainment purposes only. No one can Hypnotise you against your will and certainly nobody can make you do anything you do not want to – your subconscious mind will simply reject any suggestion that is inappropriate for you.

NB: It is advisable to consult your GP for advice, diagnosis and treatment for certain medical conditions, and always inform your health professional before starting any alternative or additional therapies or treatments.

Is the Initial Consultation necessary?

The initial consultation is the most important session you will have. We will discuss what you want to achieve in your therapy, and I will also gather important information to help me tailor and individual therapy plan for you. However, most importantly it is during this session that I explain how your brain works and how we can work together to help you achieve your goals. The session is very empowering and most of my clients start to see the benefits right away.I do not use trance during the initial consultation but I will give you a relaxation download or CD to listen to at home between our sessions together, which will help you to make better progress more quickly.

How many sessions will I need?

It can really depend on the complexity of the problem and the number of sessions can be agreed by the client and myself together after the initial consultation, however depending on your level of engagement and commitment into the process permanent changes can be seen as early as just a few session. Therapy is completed when you feel ready and have achieved the results you desire .
When dealing with a specific phobia this would normally take 3 sessions (not including the initial consultation), to stop smoking that is a single 2 hour session, no initial consultation required. When dealing with anxiety, depression, panic attack etc the duration can vary between client to client.

What if I can’t be hypnotised?

Most people can enter a state of light trance which is adequate for the therapeutic effects of hypnotherapy. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy uses a light level of trance, which has been clinically proven to be the most effective in creating change. This level of trance is achieved by using simple relaxation techniques, making it a pleasant and comfortable experience.

Do I lie down and close my eyes?

I use a recliner chair in my practice so during our talking therapy you will already be positioned in it and settled. Once it is time to do the hypnosis part of the therapy session you will then position yourself in a comfortable position with your feet up, blanket over you and with your eye closed. This allows you to feel completely relaxed and focused on what is being said.

Will you make me do something I don’t want to do?

Absolutely not. You will be in control at all times. Suggestions are tailored to you and will always be positive. And in any event, you can choose whether or not to accept any suggestions that are made.

Will I remember what happened?

You will remember most of the hypnosis part of the session but not everything. Because of the way in which the memory works you will selectively recall what is important for you. Your unconscious mind will absorb those messages that are beneficial.

Will hypnotherapy work if I am receiving other treatments?

Hypnotherapy can work well alongside the treatment that you are receiving from your doctor or other healthcare professionals. If you are receiving any other kind of treatment you should inform your hypnotherapist, so she or he can plan the best possible treatment. It is important that you continue to take advice or any medication from your doctor if you are being treated by one.
